Triggers of magnetar outbursts

چکیده

Bright outbursts from Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) are believed to be caused by instabilities in ultramagnetized neutron stars, powered by a decaying magnetic field. It was originally thought that these outbursts were due to reconnection instabilities in the magnetosphere, reached via slow evolution of magnetic footpoints anchored in the crust. Later models considered sudden shifts in the crust’s structure. Recent observations of magnetars give evidence that at least some outburst episodes involve rearrangements and/or energy releases within the star. We suggest that bursting episodes in magnetars are episodes of rapid plastic yielding in the crust, which trigger “swarms” of reconnection instabilities in the magnetosphere. Magnetic energy always dominates; elastic energy released within the crust does not generate strong enough Alfvén waves to power outbursts. We discuss the physics of SGR giant flares, and describe recent observations which give useful constraints and clues. 1.

Ultrahigh Energy Activity in Giant Magnetar Outbursts

The recent superflare of 27 December 2004 from the magnetar SGR 1806-20 was the brightest extrasolar flash ever recorded in the modern era. The chances for seeing exotic ultrahigh energy (UHE) radiation neutrons, neutrinos, gamma rays and charged cosmic rays from it are far better from an energetic point of view than from cosmological gamma ray bursts (GRBs). The chances for detecting the vario...

A Magnetar-like Outburst from a High-b Radio Pulsar

Radio pulsars are believed to have their emission powered by the loss of rotational kinetic energy. By contrast, magnetars show intense X-ray and γ-ray radiation whose luminosity greatly exceeds that due to spin-down and is believed to be powered by intense internal magnetic fields. A basic prediction of this picture is that radio pulsars of high magnetic field should show magnetar-like emissio...

Exciting the Magnetosphere of the Magnetar

We describe XMM-Newton observations taken 4.3 days prior to and 1.5 days subsequent to two remarkable events that were detected with Swift on 2006 September 21 from the candidate magnetar CXOU J164710.2-455216: (1) a 20 ms burst with an energy of 10 erg (15–150 keV), and (2) a rapid spin-down (glitch) with ∆P/P ∼ −10. We find that the luminosity of the pulsar increased by a factor of 100 in the...

Ongoing Space Physics - Astrophysics Connections

I review several ongoing connections between space physics and astrophysics: a) Measurements of energetic particle spectra have confirmed theoretical prediction of the highest energy to which shocks can accelerate particles, and this has direct bearing on the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays. b) Mass ejection in solar flares may help us understand photon ejection in the giant flares of ...

Astrophysics of the Soft Gamma Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars

I summarize the recent advances in our understanding of the Soft Gamma Repeaters: in particular their spin behavior, persistent emission and hyperEddington outbursts. The giant flares on 5 March 1979 and 27 August 1998 provide compelling physical evidence for magnetic fields stronger than 10BQED = 4.4 × 1014 G, consistent with the rapid spindown detected in two of these sources. The persistent ...
